In 2011, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded a program to improve the management skills of media owners in Africa. After a global search, Meredith was selected to manage the continent-wide program as a Knight International Fellow. He moved to Nairobi, Kenya to mentor a number of CEOs of television stations, radio stations, newspapers and new media ventures. Meredith was loaned to the African Media Initiative, the continent's largest umbrella organization of media owners.
During that time he has mentored dozens of media leaders and he has been sought out by government legislators and regulators from a number of countries to consult on media policy. He wrote a pamphlet to help African television station managers with the digital migration, he was instrumental in launching the world's first national data forum and has forged alliances between a number of African organizations. His pioneering activities include a drone journalism program and broadcasting online the African Media Leaders Forum's first Heads of State Round Table Discussion with media leaders. He also was instrumental in establishing data portals at newspapers and a number of other innovative initiatives. His current projects focus on building continent-wide networks of reporters specializing in various sectors of the economy. For more information about Meredith's fellowship activities check here
